I Should Still Celebrate Children’s Day

Tags: funny · girl

I went shopping with Jun Wei tonight at Parkway Parade. He was looking for a pair of boardshorts as his mother threw out our favourite pair of white pants. Girls are (supposedly) the ones who adore shopping. Not me though. I ended up sitting on the floor outside Planet Surf (and partially blocking people traffic) while he tried on three to four different pairs of boardshorts.

I knew that the two salesgirls at that shop kept looking at me but I pointedly ignored them because I did not feel embarrassed. Shoppers and families walked past me. Parents gave me an odd look; Children gave me curious stares. I simply looked here, there, anywhere.

Finally, after about 9834753094 years, Jun Wei emerged from Planet Surf with his precious boardshorts. He squatted to my eye level and apologised for taking so long. Then he went, “Guess what the salesgirls thought you were?”

“Your younger sister?” I asked.
He was shocked. “Huh? How did you know?”

Actually, I just got those vibes from them. They thought I was his younger sister because I was sitting outside on the floor, looking rather gloomy and moody. If I were his girlfriend, they presumed that I would be waiting for him in the store while he parades in those four boardshorts for me to see how great he looked in each of them.

Then, it was his turn to give me a shock.

“They thought you were 12.”
Whaaaaaaaat?!

Okay, I know I’ve been mistaken for being 14 or 15 but 12?! I took my PSLE eight years ago! It’s my sister’s turn next week, you fool! Baka-mono!

He was sad. “Do I really look that old?”

“Well, they did not guess how much older you were as a brother,” I replied. “Just be happy that they didn’t think that you were my dad.”

That made him stop short in his tracks.

And that made me laugh.

Happy Children’s Day!

gah I hate it so much when people dont guess my age right. 90% of the time, people think I’m a freshman in high school. -_- but I guess looking younger than your age is better compared to looking older, right? you dont look 12 by the way, those women are crazy..

>“Just be happy that they didn’t think that you were my dad.”

Heh heh, that’s funny and true! I know another couple like that. When someone calls their house and she answers the phone, the callers asks, “Can I speak with your daddy?” She answers, “Sure,” covers the phone and shouts, “Daddy, the phone’s for you!”

When you’re 40, you’ll love looking 30! I’ve always looked older than my age. It was great when I was a teenager, but it’s the worst now! T_T

Ermz…don’t worry. I got mistaken for being 12 also. This customer asked how old I was. She thought I was 12 and was wondering how come so young can work le. When I told her I’m 20, she like don’t really believe some more. Wah…I lie for what? Got money to take ar?

Well..you’ll always get discounts on tickets then. People usually treat me like I’m older than I am. I guess if you don’t do anything people automatically assume it’s because of maturity. I hate it when people call me “that lady” instead of that girl. Oh or when they ask if I want to pay with a credit card. Where is a fifteen year old girl going to get a credit card?!

Pssh, well anyways I agree shopping is boring. Kudos for your patience, I would have wandered away after 10 minutes.

Haha… Bet they were just delusional cuz they were wishing and hoping you weren’t his girlfriend.

12? That’s a bit far fetched right? I think they cockeyed la.

You don’t look like you’re 12. And I definitely understand that feeling of not really loving shopping. Sometimes I’ll get the strange random urge to go wander a mall, but it’s more therapeutic just to roam than it is to actually try on clothes and buy stuff. Something about the shopping center environment is just conducive to deep thought.

It’s cool you have a solid friendship with a guy to go shop like that. I know that shouldn’t sound like such a big deal, but I guess friendships like that are just one of those blessings I tend to take for granted.

I tend to get mistaken for being older than I really am. Which sucks. So I guess it’s the same on the other end. =/ I’d like to seem younger, but I think twelve is way too far. O_O;;

I didn’t know there was a Children’s Day. Glad that you enjoyed it nonetheless. =)
