a wasted chance

“Hi, I am just wondering if you are interested in taking part in Singapore Bartender of the Year competition held this month. Please let me know by tomorrow. Thank you.”

I was rather excited when I got this text message early this morning. But, being the usual paranoid and low self-esteemed person that I have always been (not to mention that I have only just started tending the bar), I was hesitant to try even though I could just take part to gain some experience.

A call just came for me in the afternoon. I decided to go for it since there was nothing to lose (besides my face. Can a newcomer lose face in this?) and I was really looking forward to it. Until I asked when the competition would be held.

“28th and 29th.”
“That’s… Monday and Tuesday, right?”
“Yeah.”
“What time?”
“In the afternoon. They’ll start around one.”
“Crap. I can’t. I have attachment.”
“Can’t you take half day off?”
Cringe. “Can’t.”
“Oh well… Too bad then.”
“Yeah, I guess.”

There goes my exposure as well as my learning experience. Arg!

Damn you, Attachment!
