Smoove Dance

She was slightly hesitant as he pulled her towards the building in which smoke was exuding from its wide open doors. He helped her to the priority queue, past the many people that were waiting in the normal queue, showed their passes to the bouncer who allowed them through only after she produced her ID.
After paying for their cover charges, he led her through the doors of the Smoove Room. Loud hip hop music could be heard as she took light steps after him. Scared eyes wandered through the darkness as bright and colourful lights danced around, making her feel alien among the regular clubbers.
Tugging her hand, he brought her to the bar and got two cranberry-vodkas for themselves. After downing their drinks, he led her towards the dance floor which was surrounded by a metal fence, making the area like a huge cage.
The moment she stepped into the bouncing crowd, the beat got to her and she started moving with the flow as she followed him into the middle of the dance floor. Letting the music take control, they moved their bodies along with the others around them, at times, moving on their own, lost in their little world.
At other times, when it felt right, when it felt perfect, she had her arms around his neck while his hands swam to her hips, moving together, never letting go.
It brought them back to the time, that time, so long ago and yet not quite. It was not in a club—in fact, far from it. It was back at the last night of camp where everyone was happy dancing to the beats that were blasting in the cookhouse of the campsite.
The others had converted the cookhouse into a club by placing the benches along the sides to build a wall and turned the lights out, leaving the flashlights’ beam across the area.
At that time, they were rather close because of the revelation of secrets. And everyone had begun noticing that, too. On that night, they both remembered, they had their first dance together. Exactly the same way they were dancing, never letting go.
A popular track blasted and they were transported back to the present. Looking into each others’ eyes, they smiled a secret smile, sharing that moment of a long time ago. And remembering it.
