Bee’s Story

For many years, it never occured to her.
Fly was this kid who lived around the street. Bee only got to know him after she entered elementary school as he was her classmate’s good friend. They were never properly introduced since she would say that Fly was a friend’s friend. They were never in the same class and had different groups of friends.
She always thought of him as a rather mischievous neighbour who could run rather fast. Perhaps the only thing they had in common was running. After all, they were both in the track team in middle school.
After graduating, her family moved out of the neighbourhood. She did not think that keeping in contact was necessary after they went on to different high schools. However, it was odd that even so, they kept bumping into each other on the streets.
Be it around their housing area, along the busy streets of town, in a bus going to anywhere, a resort with different friends or right in the same carriage of a train, Bee kept bumping into Fly.
And everytime she sees him, they will chat a little, feeding little updates to each other, and, before parting ways, wish each other well and promising to keep in contact.
It makes her happy and it brings a smile to her face whenever she sees that he is doing well, that he is happy with his current significant other, and that he seems worry and problem-free. It makes her glad that he is well.
After each brief incidental meet up, her mind would wander back to her childhood memories. She would think of Fly and the friends they shared, the little incidents that happened around their neighbourhood. She would see Fly’s mischievous grin, his daring ways and his fearless play.
Perhaps, just perhaps, she thinks, it was a hidden childhood crush.
