The Taxi Driver

Tags: random

It was late. Thus, he sent me off in a cab alone.

He passed me my bag, 22 bucks and gave me a quick peck on my lips before I got into the taxi.

“Good evening,” the driver greeted me. I was surprised. For so many years of taking a cab, I do not recall the first thing cab drivers say besides “Where you wanna go?”.

“Bedok North, please,” I told him.
“Ok. I’ll take the ECP route. Is that fine?”
“Sure. Thanks!”
“Is the radio ok for you? Or would you like another station?”
“Um, it’s fine. Thanks.”

I put my safety belt on and prepared for the half an hour long ride.

Suddenly, my Nokia rang out. Mother called, wondering when I was coming home. As I talked to her, I realised that the driver had turned the radio off. How considerate of him! After my call, he turned the radio back on.

I remembered listening to some dorky report on some blind/speed date that happened between this couple and the guy was giving his side first. Then some love songs came on air. I then realised I was listening to Class 95 FM.

As I gave him directions to turn to my street, he commented, “So far…”

Huh?

“… the distance between you and your boyfriend.”

Oh.

“Oh,” I said, somewhat semi-embarrassed. “Yeah, I guess so.”
“So how, if you watch late-night movie at Orchard, the cab fare very high, yah?”
“Uhm… we don’t really watch late-night movies.”
“Yeah, that’s good. But at least your case not so bad.”
“Is it?”

“Yah! I remember picking up this couple at Orchard after their late night movie. The girl live in Jurong East and when got there, the guy pass me his IC and I ask, ‘What for?’ then he say, ‘Uncle, wait for me, I send my girlfriend up first.’ I say, ‘Aiyah, never mind lah. I trust you!’ Then when he came down, I thought, ‘Hallelujah!’ he asked me to go to Pasir Ris.

“The cab fare came up to 30 plus leh! Some more still need to pay for movie ticket. Then before that they walk around Orchard. Eat also only east fast food. Tsk tsk. Movies so expensive some more…”

He went on to say about advising that guy when approaching a girl next time, take a peek at her IC to find out where she lives first before getting her.

“After the junction, turn right at the first carpark,” I told him as we neared my block.

“O-k, your damage tonight would be $12.60,” he informed me.

I paid him, thanked him, and wished him a nice evening.

Thank you, Mr. Vincent.

EDIT: Apparently, Marz made a taxi-post as well.

Ah, that’s a nice experience in a way - he is such a polite and a considerate driver. I am not sure how I would take to people advising and questioning certain personal details, but you seem to have taken it all pretty well. :)

Gotta lurve cabbies like these, they are able to change your day because of a short 10-20min timeframe together.

haha that’s quite a cool story… I once rode a cab with an uncle who kept talking about sex… When I asked him if he had any children he replied, “yeah, one sec 4, one sec 3 and one sec 2″

and I just went “OOOOOooooohhhhhhhhh….”

Oh my! the uncle is so nice! I dont usually like taking cabs unless i have to. ie when i’m late or when i have to go to school with mybrother. but the drivers are seldom so considerate unless i initiate a conversation first. tsk. lol

It is cabbies like this that makes us realize that the world is full of nice people, after all. To think that I am scribbling up a taxi-related post as well. =) Hehe! Great minds think alike. =)

It’s very rare to encounter such nice taxi drivers these days. Most taxi drivers in Singapore are either hell-drivers, or pretty darn rude.

What’s the taxi number? :P I’ll keep a good lookout for him!

can you remember the car license plate number? If yes, maybe write a letter to the taxi company. Maybe they will reward him or something.

Good taxi driver like him are really hard to come by.

vincent? was he an indian driver? cause i remembered takin a cab ride from a cabby called vincent before. 40s and 50s. and he speaks perfect fluent chinese and he composes music for chinese singers cause he lived in Taiwan before for quite a few years. i had a 45 minutes talk with him after the cab reached my house. that was one of the most amazing cab rides and the most amazing cabby i ever saw. if its the same den i wouldn’t be surprised.

I’m sorry to disappoint you but he was a Chinese guy. Looked like he was in his 30s actually. Still, I’m glad you have once come across a nice driver by that name.

12.70$??? wth. that IS really expensive…either the taxi rates for singapore have shot up, or wow that REALLY is very far. why did he give you 22$? was it for cab fare or something?
